Hello 2024
I apologize for the extended absence since my last post in July. Let’s just say I’ve had a few personal and professional distractions. I completed a research project. Still waiting for that outcome. And my family faced a few unexpected health challenges (don’t we all at some point).
Now, let's move forward from the topic of architect serial killers, which wasn't the best choice for a long period of inactivity. Going forward, I aim to be more consistent in delivering informative and occasionally snarky commentary.
Speaking of writing, which happens to be my favorite topic, I've learned a few things through my teaching experiences with AIAVA/NOMA VA, AIANC/NOMA NC, Morgan State University, A'23, and AIAME:
Architects everywhere are deeply passionate about effectively communicating their ideas and intentions.
Interestingly, emerging professionals often excel at storytelling compared to their more seasoned counterparts. Unfortunately, they are often overwhelmed by day-to-day demands, leaving little time to practice and hone their talents.
This time constraint also applies to established professionals. Finding the time and developing an efficient process to craft compelling stories is a challenge.
An award season presents a perfect opportunity to refine these skills, but it requires early preparation—ideally starting at least three months in advance of the deadline. More time allows for reflection, reviewing and revising, and ultimately better writing.
In the coming months, I'll share guidelines on uncovering the core of your story, whether you're crafting language and narratives for your firm or seeking professional recognition, such as Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) or a design award following the AIA Framework for Design Excellence (which applies to all AIA honors and design awards).
What specific aspects of writing for these topics interest you? Feel free to share your thoughts, comments, and questions, and I'll be honored to address them here.
Here's to a year of exceptional writing and captivating stories in 2024!"
